Rizatriptan is used for the acute treatment of migraine headaches in adults.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Relieving migraine headache pain
• Reducing migraine-associated symptoms such as nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound
• Treating migraine with or without aura

HOW IT WORKS

• Acts on serotonin (5-HT1) receptors in the brain
• Causes narrowing of dilated blood vessels around the brain
• Blocks release of certain pain-causing chemicals, reducing inflammation and pain signals

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for prevention of migraine attacks
• Not used for tension-type headaches or other common headaches
• Not used for cluster headaches
• Not a general painkiller for body aches or fever

How to Use Rizatriptan 10mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually as soon as migraine symptoms begin
• Can be taken with or without food
• Swallow the tablet with water; if using an orally dissolving form, let it dissolve on the tongue
• Do not take a second dose for the same attack without your doctor's advice
• Do not exceed the number of doses allowed in a day or week as instructed by your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• This medicine is taken only when a migraine attack occurs, not on a fixed daily schedule
• There is no missed dose concept as with regular daily medicines

• Severe abdominal pain or bloody diarrhoea

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have had a heart attack, stroke, or mini-stroke in the past
• Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
• Have known heart disease, including angina or irregular heart rhythms
• Have severe liver or kidney disease
• Are allergic to rizatriptan or other triptan medicines
• Have taken another triptan or ergotamine-type medicine within the last 24 hours

• Have risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes, smoking, obesity, or family history
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of seizures
• Are taking antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs)

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other triptans or ergotamine-based medicines
• MAO inhibitors
• SSRIs and SNRIs (risk of serotonin syndrome)
• Propranolol, which may increase rizatriptan levels
