Rizatriptan is used to treat sudden migraine headache attacks in adults.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Relief of acute migraine headache attacks
• Relief of migraine symptoms such as nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound that occur along with the headache

HOW IT WORKS

• It acts on serotonin (5-HT1) receptors in the brain
• This causes narrowing of the widened blood vessels around the brain that cause migraine pain
• It also helps reduce the release of substances that cause pain and inflammation during a migraine attack

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used to prevent migraine attacks from occurring
• It is not used for other types of headaches such as tension headache or cluster headache
• It is not a routine painkiller for everyday aches and pains
• It is not used for migraine with weakness on one side of the body (hemiplegic migraine) or basilar migraine

This medicine works best when taken as soon as migraine symptoms begin, rather than waiting until the headache becomes severe. It does not treat the underlying cause of migraine, so your doctor may also advise lifestyle changes or other medicines if attacks are frequent.

How to Use Rizatriptan 5mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, as soon as migraine symptoms start
• It can be taken with or without food
• Swallow the tablet with water; if a dissolving tablet is given, let it dissolve on the tongue
• If the headache improves but comes back, your doctor may allow a second dose after a gap, but always follow their specific instructions
• Do not take more than the number of doses in 24 hours advised by your doctor
• If your migraine does not improve after the first dose, do not take a second dose for the same attack without checking with your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• This medicine is taken only when needed for a migraine attack, not on a fixed daily schedule
• There is no missed dose situation as with regular daily medicines
• Take it as soon as you notice migraine symptoms starting

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, light, and moisture
• Keep in the original packaging until ready to use
• Keep out of reach and sight of children
• Do not use the medicine after its expiry date

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Irregular or very fast heartbeat
• Sudden severe abdominal pain or bloody diarrhoea (signs of reduced blood flow to intestines)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to rizatriptan or any other triptan medicine
• Have had a heart attack, stroke, or mini-stroke in the past
• Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
• Have severe liver or kidney disease
• Have a heart rhythm problem or coronary artery disease
• Have taken another triptan medicine or an ergotamine-type medicine in the last 24 hours

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have risk factors for heart disease such as diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, or family history
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of seizures
• Have mild to moderate liver or kidney problems
• Are taking antidepressants, especially SSRIs or SNRIs

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other triptans or ergotamine-containing medicines
• Certain antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), due to risk of serotonin syndrome
• Propranolol, which can increase blood levels of rizatriptan
• MAO inhibitors
