Safinamide 50mg — Uses and Benefits

Safinamide 50mg is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

  • As add-on therapy with levodopa in Parkinson's disease patients with motor fluctuations ("wearing-off" episodes)
  • To help improve movement, stiffness and tremor control during the day

HOW IT WORKS

  • It blocks an enzyme called MAO-B that breaks down dopamine in the brain
  • This helps keep dopamine levels higher for longer, improving symptom control
  • It also has some effect on reducing abnormal nerve signalling that contributes to Parkinson's symptoms

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

  • It is not a cure for Parkinson's disease, only helps control symptoms
  • It is not used alone as first-line therapy; it is added to existing levodopa treatment
  • It is not meant for other types of tremors unrelated to Parkinson's disease
  • It is not for depression or other psychiatric disorders
