Simvastatin 40 mg is mainly used to treat high cholesterol and to reduce the risk of heart-related problems.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Lowering high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides
• Raising good cholesterol (HDL) levels
• Reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in people with heart disease or risk factors
• Preventing further cardiovascular problems in people with existing heart disease or diabetes

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks an enzyme in the liver called HMG-CoA reductase that is needed to make cholesterol
• Lowers the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver
• Helps the liver remove cholesterol already present in the blood

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for immediate relief of chest pain or a heart attack in progress
• Not a treatment for infections or general body pain
• Not used for weight loss
• Not a substitute for diet and lifestyle changes advised by your doctor

How to Use Simvastatin 40 mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily in the evening
• Swallow the tablet whole with water
• Can be taken with or without food, but try to keep the timing consistent each day
• Avoid grapefruit juice as it can increase side effects
• Do not increase or decrease the dose on your own

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the pack

• Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially with fever or dark-coloured urine
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, severe tiredness (signs of liver problems)
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, or throat, and difficulty breathing
• Signs of pancreatitis such as severe stomach pain spreading to the back
