Sodium valproate is mainly used to treat epilepsy and certain mood disorders. It works by calming down excess electrical activity in the brain.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling different types of seizures/fits in epilepsy

• Preventing migraine headaches in some patients

HOW IT WORKS

• It increases the levels of a calming brain chemical called GABA
• It stabilises overactive electrical signals in brain cells
• This reduces the frequency and severity of seizures and mood swings

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat headache on its own
• It is not used for infections
• It is not a first-choice medicine during pregnancy due to risks to the unborn baby
• It should not be used to self-treat anxiety or sleep problems without a doctor's advice

This medicine must be taken only under medical supervision, and the dose is adjusted by your doctor based on your response and blood levels.

How to Use Sodium Valproate

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow tablets whole with water; do not crush or chew unless your doctor says it is fine
• If using syrup, use the measuring cup/spoon provided
• Take it at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady levels in the blood
• Do not stop suddenly, as this can trigger seizures; any change must be done gradually under medical guidance

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• If you miss doses often, inform your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep syrup bottles tightly closed after use

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea or stomach upset
• Weight gain
• Hair thinning or hair loss
• Tremor (shaking of hands)

• Mild swelling of hands or feet
• Confusion or difficulty concentrating

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting (possible pancreatitis)
• Unusual bleeding, bruising, or repeated infections
• Severe drowsiness, confusion, or loss of consciousness
• Signs of allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of face/lips, difficulty breathing
• Suicidal thoughts or unusual changes in mood or behaviour

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
