Telmisartan 40mg is mainly used to treat high blood pressure and to help protect the heart in people at risk of cardiovascular problems.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating high blood pressure (hypertension)
• Reducing risk of heart attack, stroke, or death in people with heart disease or high risk of it who cannot take ACE inhibitors
• Sometimes used to protect kidneys in people with diabetes, as advised by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks the action of a natural chemical called angiotensin II that narrows blood vessels
• This relaxes and widens blood vessels, lowering blood pressure
• Reduces the workload on the heart

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not a painkiller and does not treat pain or fever
• Not used for immediate relief of a hypertensive emergency
• Not a substitute for lifestyle changes like diet, exercise, and weight control
• Not for use during pregnancy

How to Use Telmisartan 40mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day
• Can be taken with or without food
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water
• Try to take it at the same time each day to build a routine
• Do not stop taking it suddenly even if you feel fine, unless your doctor tells you to
• Continue regular blood pressure checks as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one
• If you often forget doses, set a daily reminder or speak to your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep in the original packaging until use

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
• Signs of high potassium such as muscle weakness or irregular heartbeat
• Severe dizziness, fainting, or very low blood pressure
• Signs of kidney problems like reduced urination or swelling in legs
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, or signs of liver problems

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are pregnant or planning pregnancy

• Have severe liver disease or bile duct problems
• Are taking certain diabetes medicines containing aliskiren, especially if you have diabetes or kidney impairment
