Terazosin is commonly prescribed to relieve urinary symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate gland and to help control high blood pressure.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Difficulty in urinating, weak urine stream, and frequent urination caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
• Management of high blood pressure, either alone or with other medicines

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks alpha-1 receptors in the muscles of the prostate and bladder neck, relaxing them so urine flows more easily
• Relaxes blood vessel walls, which lowers resistance to blood flow and reduces blood pressure

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used to treat prostate cancer or infections of the urinary tract
• Not a cure for enlarged prostate; it only manages symptoms
• Not meant for emergency treatment of very high blood pressure
• Not recommended for use in women or children

How to Use Terazosin (1mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day at bedtime
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water; it can be taken with or without food
• The first dose is usually taken at night to reduce the risk of dizziness or fainting on standing
• Do not stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better
• Rise slowly from sitting or lying down, especially when starting treatment

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Headache
• Weakness or tiredness
• Nausea
• Nasal congestion (stuffy nose)

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Swelling of hands, feet, or ankles
• Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
• Blurred vision
• Dry mouth
• Sleepiness

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Fainting, especially after standing up suddenly (first-dose effect)
• Chest pain or severe palpitations
• Prolonged, painful erection (priapism)
• Signs of allergic reaction such as rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing
• Severe dizziness affecting ability to stand or drive

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to terazosin or other alpha-blockers

• Other blood pressure–lowering medicines
• Medicines for erectile dysfunction such as sildenafil or tadalafil
• Other alpha-blockers
• NSAIDs (pain relievers) which may reduce its effect
