Tobramycin — Uses and Benefits

Tobramycin is used to treat infections caused by certain bacteria, especially eye infections and, in injectable form, serious systemic infections in hospitalised patients.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Bacterial infections of the eye such as conjunctivitis, keratitis and infections after eye surgery
• Serious infections like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and blood infections when used as an injection under hospital care
• Infections in cystic fibrosis patients when used as an inhaled form (in specific cases)

HOW IT WORKS

• It belongs to a class of antibiotics called aminoglycosides
• It stops bacteria from making proteins they need to survive and multiply
• This leads to the death of the bacteria causing the infection

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as common cold, flu or viral conjunctivitis
• Fungal infections
• General pain or inflammation not caused by bacterial infection
• Self-treatment without a doctor's prescription and proper diagnosis

How to Use Tobramycin

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Use exactly as prescribed by your doctor, in the strength, form and duration advised
• For eye drops: wash hands, tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid and place the drop inside without touching the eye or tip to any surface
• For eye ointment: apply a thin strip inside the lower eyelid as directed
• Injectable tobramycin is given only by trained healthcare staff, usually in a hospital
• Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early, unless your doctor tells you to stop
• Do not share your medicine with others, even if they have similar symptoms

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Apply or take the missed dose as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as scheduled
• Do not apply or take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store as per instructions on the label, usually below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep the eye drops/ointment tightly capped and away from children
• Discard any opened eye drop bottle after the period mentioned on the label, usually 4 weeks
• Do not use if the liquid changes colour or becomes cloudy

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Mild burning, stinging or itching after eye drops
• Temporary blurred vision after applying eye drops or ointment
• Redness or irritation of the eye

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Eyelid swelling or crusting
• Watering of eyes
• Skin rash or itching (with injectable form)

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Hearing loss, ringing in ears or dizziness (mainly with injectable use)
• Reduced urine output or swelling of feet/face, which may indicate kidney problems
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, throat, difficulty breathing, or severe rash
• Muscle weakness or difficulty breathing
• Severe eye pain, worsening vision, or eye swelling that does not improve

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to tobramycin or other aminoglycoside antibiotics

• Have any hearing problems or balance disorders

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Diuretics such as furosemide (may increase toxicity)
• Muscle relaxants used during surgery (effect may be increased)
• Other nephrotoxic drugs like certain painkillers or contrast dyes
