Topiramate is mainly used to treat epilepsy and to prevent migraine attacks.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling certain types of seizures (fits) in adults and children
• Used along with other medicines when seizures are not controlled by a single drug
• Preventing frequent migraine headaches

HOW IT WORKS

• It calms down overactive electrical signals in the brain
• It helps stabilise nerve cell activity, reducing the chance of seizures
• It also helps reduce the frequency of migraine attacks by acting on the brain's nerve pathways

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and will not relieve a migraine attack that has already started
• It is not used for general anxiety or mood disorders
• It is not a cure for epilepsy; it only helps control seizures

How to Use Topiramate 25mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day
• Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Can be taken with or without food
• Drink plenty of water during the day while on this medicine to reduce risk of kidney stones
• Do not stop suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can trigger seizures

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• If you miss doses often, inform your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, light and moisture
• Keep in the original container, tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Tingling sensation in hands or feet
• Tiredness or drowsiness
• Dizziness
• Loss of appetite and weight loss
• Difficulty concentrating or memory problems

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Mood changes such as irritability or feeling low
• Taste changes, especially with fizzy drinks
• Dry mouth
• Diarrhoea or stomach upset
• Hair loss

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe eye pain or sudden vision changes
• Signs of kidney stones such as severe back or side pain, blood in urine
• Unusual thoughts of self-harm or suicide
• Severe allergic reaction with rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, or difficulty breathing
• Confusion, difficulty speaking, or unsteady movements
• Rapid breathing or unusual tiredness (possible metabolic acidosis)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
