Trimethoprim is an antibiotic mainly used to treat infections of the urinary tract.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as cystitis
• Prevention of recurrent UTIs in people who get frequent infections
• Sometimes used for other bacterial infections as advised by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• It blocks an enzyme that bacteria need to make folic acid
• Without folic acid, bacteria cannot grow or multiply
• This helps the body's immune system clear the infection

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not treat viral infections such as cold or flu
• It is not effective against fungal infections
• It should not be used for infections it is not prescribed for, as this can lead to resistance

Always complete the full course as directed by your doctor, even if you feel better before finishing it, to prevent the infection from returning or bacteria becoming resistant.

How to Use Trimethoprim 100mg

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day
• Can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine
• Complete the full course even if you feel better

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Loss of appetite
• Skin rash

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Itching
• Headache
• Sore or inflamed tongue
• Changes in taste

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin
• Swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat
• Difficulty breathing
• Unusual bruising or bleeding
• Signs of low blood cell counts such as fever, sore throat, or extreme tiredness
• Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to trimethoprim or any of its ingredients
• Have severe kidney disease without medical supervision
• Have a folate deficiency or blood disorder such as megaloblastic anaemia

• Are pregnant or planning pregnancy
• Are breastfeeding
• Have kidney or liver problems
• Have a history of blood disorders
• Are taking other medicines, including supplements

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Methotrexate
• Phenytoin
• Warfarin and other blood thinners
• Diuretics, especially in older adults
• ACE inhibitors or medicines that raise potassium levels
• Other antibiotics such as sulfonamides
