Valacyclovir 500mg — Uses and Benefits
Valacyclovir 500mg is prescribed to treat viral infections caused by herpes simplex and varicella-zoster viruses.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Cold sores (herpes labialis) around the mouth
- Genital herpes, including first episodes and recurrent outbreaks
- Shingles (herpes zoster) in adults
- Suppressive therapy to reduce frequency of recurrent genital herpes outbreaks
- Reducing risk of transmitting genital herpes to a partner, when used as advised by a doctor
HOW IT WORKS
- It is converted in the body to acyclovir, an antiviral substance
- It stops the herpes virus from multiplying by blocking a viral enzyme needed for copying its genetic material
- This helps reduce the severity and duration of symptoms and speeds up healing
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It does not cure herpes infection completely; the virus remains dormant in the body
- It is not effective against bacterial, fungal infections, or common cold/flu viruses
