Uses and Benefits of SALTUM TABLET (SULTAMICILLIN 375MG)

Sultamicillin is prescribed to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria in different parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Respiratory tract infections such as sinusitis, bronchitis and pneumonia
• Ear, nose and throat infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Certain infections of the abdomen and pelvis as advised by a doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Contains ampicillin, an antibiotic that stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall, causing them to die
• Contains sulbactam, which blocks certain bacterial enzymes that would otherwise destroy ampicillin, helping the antibiotic work against more types of bacteria
• Together, they widen the range of bacteria that can be treated compared to ampicillin alone

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as common cold, flu or most sore throats
• Fungal infections
• As a general painkiller or fever medicine
• Prevention of infection unless specifically advised by a surgeon or doctor before a procedure

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Diarrhoea
• Stomach upset or discomfort
• Vomiting
• Loss of appetite

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Skin rash or itching
• Headache
• Vaginal itching or discharge due to yeast infection
• Mild oral thrush
• Dizziness

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe skin rash, blistering, peeling skin
• Swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing (signs of severe allergic reaction)
• Severe or bloody diarrhoea, especially with stomach cramps and fever (may indicate a serious bowel infection)
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Unusual bleeding, bruising or signs of infection (could suggest blood cell problems)

How to Use SALTUM TABLET (SULTAMICILLIN 375MG)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, at the same times each day
• Can be taken with or without food, but taking with food may reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless your doctor says it is safe
• Complete the full course even if you feel better before finishing it, unless your doctor tells you to stop
• Do not skip doses, as this can make the infection harder to treat

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• If a liquid suspension has been prepared, check the label for how long it can be kept, usually a short number of days when refrigerated

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to penicillins, ampicillin, sulbactam or related antibiotics
• Have had a severe allergic reaction to any beta-lactam antibiotic in the past

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney disease
• Have liver disease
• Have a history of glandular fever (infectious mononucleosis)
• Have a history of severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Are taking any other regular medicines or supplements

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Allopurinol, which may increase risk of skin rash
• Oral contraceptive pills, as effectiveness may be reduced
• Methotrexate, as levels in the body may increase
• Probenecid, which can raise levels of this medicine
• Other antibiotics, only if combined under medical advice
