This combination is used to treat serious and severe bacterial infections that need hospital-level care.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Severe lower respiratory tract infections
• Complicated urinary tract infections
• Intra-abdominal infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Bone and joint infections
• Bacterial infections of the blood (septicaemia)
• Gynaecological infections
• Infections in patients with weakened immunity

HOW IT WORKS

• Imipenem kills bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall
• Cilastatin blocks an enzyme in the kidney that would otherwise destroy imipenem, so more active drug stays in the body
• Together they give a broad range of antibacterial action against many resistant organisms

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as flu or common cold
• Fungal infections
• Mild infections that can be treated with oral antibiotics
• As a first-choice antibiotic for routine, uncomplicated infections

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Pain, redness or swelling at injection site
• Rash

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Fever
• Changes in liver enzyme levels
• Low blood pressure

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Seizures or convulsions
• Severe or persistent diarrhoea (may indicate a serious gut infection)
• Signs of severe skin reaction such as blistering or peeling skin
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Signs of kidney problems such as reduced urination or swelling

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Complete the full course exactly as advised, even if you feel better before it is finished
• Do not stop treatment early without your doctor's advice

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Since this medicine is given in a hospital or clinical setting by healthcare staff, missed doses are unlikely
• If a dose is delayed or missed, inform the treating doctor or nurse right away so the schedule can be adjusted
• Do not try to self-administer a missed or extra dose

STORAGE

• This medicine is stored and handled by hospital or pharmacy staff under controlled conditions
• It should be kept away from direct heat, light and moisture
• Once prepared for injection, it should be used within the time specified by the manufacturer
• Not intended for home storage

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to imipenem, cilastatin, or other beta-lactam antibiotics like penicillins or cephalosporins

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Ganciclovir (increased risk of seizures)
• Valproic acid or sodium valproate (can reduce its effectiveness, raising seizure risk)
• Other antibiotics being given at the same time
• Blood thinners like warfarin
• Probenecid
