WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Severe lower respiratory tract infections
- Complicated urinary tract infections
- Intra-abdominal infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Bacterial infections of the blood (septicaemia)
- Gynaecological infections
- Infections in patients with weakened immunity
HOW IT WORKS
- Imipenem kills bacteria by stopping them from building their protective cell wall
- Cilastatin blocks an enzyme in the kidney that would otherwise destroy imipenem, so more active drug stays in the body
- Together they give a broad range of antibacterial action against many resistant organisms
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- Viral infections such as flu or common cold
- Fungal infections
- Mild infections that can be treated with oral antibiotics
- As a first-choice antibiotic for routine, uncomplicated infections

- Signs of severe skin reaction such as blistering or peeling skin
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- Signs of kidney problems such as reduced urination or swelling

- If a dose is delayed or missed, inform the treating doctor or nurse right away so the schedule can be adjusted
- Do not try to self-administer a missed or extra dose

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
- Are allergic to imipenem, cilastatin, or other beta-lactam antibiotics like penicillins or cephalosporins
- Have had a severe allergic reaction to any antibiotic in the past

- Have kidney disease or reduced kidney function
- Have a history of seizures or any brain/nervous system disorder
- Have a history of gut disorders like colitis

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT
- Ganciclovir (increased risk of seizures)
- Valproic acid or sodium valproate (can reduce its effectiveness, raising seizure risk)
- Other antibiotics being given at the same time
- Blood thinners like warfarin
- Probenecid
