This combination medicine is mainly used to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and other problems caused by blood clots in people with cardiovascular disease.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Preventing blood clots after a heart attack
• Preventing clots after placement of a coronary stent
• Reducing risk of stroke in high-risk patients
• Preventing recurrent cardiovascular events in people with known heart disease

HOW IT WORKS

• Clopidogrel stops platelets from sticking together by blocking a specific receptor on them
• Aspirin reduces platelet clumping by blocking a chemical called thromboxane
• Together they give stronger protection against clot formation than either alone

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for treating an active heart attack or stroke on its own
• Not a painkiller, though aspirin alone has pain-relief properties

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day
• Swallow the tablet whole with water
• Take with or after food to reduce stomach upset
• Try to take it at the same time every day
• Do not stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor, especially if you have a stent

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
