Uses and Benefits of DIRAGYL TABLET (GATIFLOXACIN (200MG) + ORNIDAZOLE (500MG))

This combination medicine is commonly prescribed for infections of the gastrointestinal tract, such as diarrhoea caused by mixed bacterial and amoebic infection, as well as certain abdominal and pelvic infections.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Bacterial and amoebic diarrhoea or dysentery
• Intestinal infections caused by mixed organisms
• Abdominal infections following surgery, as advised by doctor
• Certain gynaecological infections

HOW IT WORKS

• Gatifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that stops bacteria from multiplying by blocking enzymes needed for their DNA replication
• Ornidazole is an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent that damages the DNA of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa like amoeba, killing them
• Together they cover a broader range of causative organisms in mixed infections

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as common cold or flu
• Simple diarrhoea due to dietary causes without infection
• Tuberculosis
• Fungal infections

This medicine should only be used for the condition your doctor has diagnosed and prescribed it for, and not shared with others or used for unrelated symptoms.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea

• Metallic taste in mouth
• Headache

• Skin rash or itching

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing
• Tendon pain, swelling, or sudden tendon rupture
• Numbness, tingling, or weakness in hands or feet
• Severe diarrhoea with blood (could indicate a serious gut infection)
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Seizures or fits
• Irregular heartbeat or palpitations
• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling

How to Use DIRAGYL TABLET (GATIFLOXACIN (200MG) + ORNIDAZOLE (500MG))

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with or after food to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew unless your doctor tells you to
• Complete the full course even if you feel better after a few days, to prevent the infection from returning or becoming resistant
• Avoid alcohol during treatment as it can worsen side effects like nausea and dizziness
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Discard any unused medicine safely as advised by your pharmacist

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to gatifloxacin, ornidazole, or other quinolone/nitroimidazole medicines
• Have a history of tendon disorders linked to fluoroquinolones
• Have epilepsy or a seizure disorder that is not well controlled
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by your doctor
• Are a child, unless prescribed by a specialist

• Have kidney or liver disease
• Have a heart condition, especially irregular heartbeat
• Have diabetes, as this medicine can affect blood sugar levels
• Have a nerve disorder
• Are taking blood thinners or other long-term medicines

• Antacids, iron, or calcium supplements, which can reduce absorption if taken together
