Phenytoin oral suspension is mainly used to treat and prevent seizures (fits) in people with epilepsy.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures
• Controlling complex partial seizures
• Preventing and treating seizures occurring during or after brain surgery
• Managing status epilepticus (as directed in hospital settings)

HOW IT WORKS

• Phenytoin stabilises the electrical activity of nerve cells in the brain
• It reduces the spread of abnormal electrical signals that cause seizures
• This helps prevent seizures from starting or spreading

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat headaches or migraines
• It is not used for absence (petit mal) seizures, and may worsen them
• It is not a cure for epilepsy; it only controls seizures while taken regularly
• It should not be used for anxiety, sleep problems, or general nerve pain

How to Use EPTOIN SYRUP (PHENYTOIN (30MG/5ML))

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually by mouth
• Shake the bottle well before use to mix the suspension evenly
• Use the measuring cup or oral syringe provided; do not use a regular kitchen spoon
• Take it at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady levels in the body
• Can be taken with or after food if it upsets your stomach
• Do not stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can trigger seizures
• Do not change the brand or formulation without talking to your doctor, as absorption can vary

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
