Ganciclovir 250mg is mainly used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, particularly in people whose immune system is weakened, such as those with HIV/AIDS or organ transplant recipients.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Treatment of CMV retinitis (eye infection) in immunocompromised patients
- Prevention of CMV disease in patients undergoing organ or bone marrow transplant
- Management of other serious CMV infections as advised by the doctor
HOW IT WORKS
- Ganciclovir gets converted into an active form inside infected cells
- It blocks the enzyme the virus needs to copy its genetic material
- This stops the virus from multiplying and spreading further in the body
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- It is not used for common cold, flu, or ordinary viral fever
- It is not effective against bacterial or fungal infections
- It is not a cure for HIV/AIDS itself
- It should not be used for minor herpes infections where other antivirals are preferred

HOW TO TAKE IT
- Ganciclovir is usually given as an intravenous infusion in a hospital or clinic under medical supervision
