Danazol is used to treat hormone-related conditions in women and certain inherited swelling disorders.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Endometriosis (tissue similar to uterus lining growing outside the uterus)
• Fibrocystic breast disease (painful lumpy breast tissue)
• Hereditary angioedema (recurrent swelling attacks under the skin, in the throat, or gut)
• Some cases of heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, as decided by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Danazol suppresses the pituitary hormones that stimulate the ovaries, reducing estrogen production
• This lowers estrogen-driven growth of endometrial tissue and breast cysts
• In hereditary angioedema, it increases the level of a protein that controls swelling attacks
