Mesalamine is used to treat inflammatory conditions of the large intestine, mainly ulcerative colitis, and to help maintain remission once symptoms improve.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating mild to moderate ulcerative colitis
• Maintaining remission and preventing flare-ups of ulcerative colitis
• Reducing inflammation, diarrhoea, and blood or mucus in stools caused by colitis

HOW IT WORKS

• It acts locally on the lining of the colon and rectum
• It blocks chemicals in the body that cause inflammation
• This reduces swelling, irritation and damage to the gut lining

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not used for infectious diarrhoea caused by bacteria or viruses
• It is not a painkiller for general stomach pain unrelated to colitis
• It is not used to treat Crohn's disease affecting the small intestine unless specifically advised by your doctor
• It is not a cure; it controls symptoms and inflammation

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with or after food
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless your doctor says it is fine
• Take at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady effect
• Continue the full course even if you feel better, unless your doctor advises stopping
• Do not increase or decrease the dose on your own

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• If you miss doses often, tell your doctor, as this can affect disease control

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight
