Nicotinic acid is mainly used to treat high cholesterol and triglyceride levels (dyslipidemia) in people who need help managing their blood fat levels along with diet and lifestyle changes.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• To lower high triglyceride levels in the blood
• To lower bad cholesterol (LDL)
• To raise good cholesterol (HDL)
• As an add-on to diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatment when advised by a doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• It reduces the release of fatty acids from fat tissue, which lowers triglyceride production in the liver
• It decreases the production of LDL (bad) cholesterol
• It increases HDL (good) cholesterol levels by slowing its breakdown

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Avoid taking it with hot beverages or alcohol around the same time, as this can increase flushing
• Do not increase or decrease the dose on your own

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to nicotinic acid or niacin
• Have active liver disease

• Are actively bleeding (arterial bleeding)
