Uses and Benefits of NIFTAS 50MG TABLET (Nitrofurantoin 50mg)

Nitrofurantoin is mainly used to treat and prevent infections of the urinary tract, especially bladder infections (cystitis).

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating acute urinary tract infections
• Preventing recurring UTIs in people who get them frequently, as advised by a doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• It gets concentrated in the urine and damages the bacterial cells there, stopping them from multiplying
• It works best against common UTI-causing bacteria like E. coli

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not effective for infections outside the urinary tract, such as kidney infections with fever, chest infections, or throat infections
• It is not used for viral illnesses like cold or flu
• It is not a general-purpose antibiotic and should not be used without a doctor's prescription

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Headache
• Stomach upset or diarrhoea

• Numbness or tingling in hands or feet
• Signs of severe allergic reaction: swelling of face/lips/throat, severe rash, difficulty breathing
• Unusual bruising or bleeding

How to Use NIFTAS 50MG TABLET (Nitrofurantoin 50mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with food or milk to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water
• Complete the full course even if you feel better, unless your doctor tells you to stop
• Do not take more than the prescribed dose or for longer than advised
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medicine, unless your doctor advises otherwise

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take double the dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to nitrofurantoin or any other ingredient in it
• Have severe kidney disease or very low urine output
• Are in the last weeks of pregnancy or during labour
• Are breastfeeding a baby less than one month old

• Have any kidney problems

• Have nerve problems (neuropathy)
• Have a deficiency of the enzyme G6PD

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate (can reduce absorption)
• Probenecid or sulfinpyrazone (used for gout, can increase nitrofurantoin levels)
• Other medicines affecting the kidneys or liver
