Posaconazole is used to treat and prevent serious fungal infections in the body, particularly in patients whose immune system is weakened due to disease or treatment.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Prevention of invasive fungal infections in high-risk patients such as those undergoing chemotherapy or organ/stem cell transplant
• Treatment of certain fungal infections like oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush) that has not responded to other antifungals
• Treatment of invasive aspergillosis and other serious fungal infections when other medicines are not suitable

HOW IT WORKS

• It blocks an enzyme fungi need to build their cell membrane
• This weakens the fungal cell wall and stops the fungus from growing and spreading
• Over time this helps the body clear the infection

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not treat bacterial or viral infections such as cold, flu, or common bacterial infections
• It is not used for minor skin fungal infections that respond to topical creams
