Propylthiouracil is used mainly to manage an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism), including conditions like Graves' disease.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treating hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
• Controlling symptoms before thyroid surgery
• Managing thyroid storm (a severe worsening of hyperthyroidism), usually in hospital settings
• Long-term control of thyroid hormone levels in certain patients, including some pregnant women when other options are unsuitable

HOW IT WORKS

• It blocks an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase that the thyroid gland needs to make thyroid hormone
• It also reduces conversion of one thyroid hormone (T4) to its more active form (T3) in the body
• This lowers the amount of circulating thyroid hormone, easing symptoms like rapid heartbeat, weight loss, and anxiety

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
• It is not a first-choice treatment for most non-pregnant adults with hyperthyroidism due to liver risk, unless other options are not suitable
• It is not used for thyroid cancer
• It does not provide immediate relief of symptoms; it takes time to lower hormone levels

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea or upset stomach
• Headache

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, or severe tiredness (signs of liver damage)

• Severe abdominal pain
• Signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Severe joint pain with rash (a rare vasculitis-type reaction)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually in divided doses through the day

• Do not stop taking it suddenly without talking to your doctor, even if you feel better
• Attend all scheduled blood tests to monitor thyroid function and liver health

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take double doses to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
