Uses and Benefits of RCIN SUSPENSION (RIFAMPICIN 100 MG/5ML)

Rifampicin oral suspension is mainly used to treat tuberculosis and certain other serious bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria and is almost always given along with other medicines.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of tuberculosis (TB), usually combined with other anti-TB drugs
• Prevention of meningitis in people who have been in close contact with certain bacterial infections
• Treatment of leprosy as part of combination therapy
• Certain other bacterial infections as advised by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Rifampicin blocks an enzyme bacteria need to make RNA
• This stops bacteria from multiplying and growing
• It works best when combined with other antibiotics to prevent resistance

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as common cold or flu
• Fungal infections
• Simple infections that do not need this strength of antibiotic
• Self-treatment without a doctor's prescription and monitoring

Side Effects of RCIN SUSPENSION (RIFAMPICIN 100 MG/5ML)

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Orange-red discolouration of urine, sweat, saliva and tears (harmless)
• Nausea or stomach upset
• Loss of appetite
• Mild diarrhoea

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Skin rash or itching
• Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, body ache) especially with irregular dosing

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or signs of liver problems
• Severe skin reactions such as blistering, peeling skin
• Difficulty breathing, swelling of face/lips/throat (allergic reaction)
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Severe or persistent vomiting, loss of appetite, or extreme tiredness

How to Use RCIN SUSPENSION (RIFAMPICIN 100 MG/5ML)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Best taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after food, for better absorption
• Shake the bottle well before measuring the dose
• Use the measuring cup or oral syringe provided, not a regular kitchen spoon
• Complete the full course even if you feel better; stopping early can lead to drug resistance
• Do not change the dose without consulting your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to take doses at the same time each day to avoid missing them

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep the bottle tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Check the expiry date and discard unused liquid after the recommended period once opened
• Do not use if the suspension looks separated or discoloured beyond expected orange-red colour

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to rifampicin or any other rifamycin antibiotic
• Have had a severe reaction to this medicine in the past
• Have active severe liver disease, unless your doctor advises otherwise

• Have liver or kidney disease
