Sevelamer Carbonate is mainly prescribed to control high blood phosphate (phosphorus) levels in people with chronic kidney disease, especially those undergoing dialysis.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high phosphate levels in blood (hyperphosphatemia) in chronic kidney disease patients
• Used in patients on dialysis or with advanced kidney disease as advised by a nephrologist
• Helps prevent complications related to excess phosphate such as bone and heart problems over time

HOW IT WORKS

• Binds to phosphate present in the food you eat, within the stomach and intestine
• Prevents this phosphate from being absorbed into the bloodstream
• The bound phosphate is then removed from the body through stool
• Does not get significantly absorbed into the bloodstream itself

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used to treat kidney disease itself, only manages phosphate levels

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take at the same times each day, along with each main meal, for best effect
• Continue taking it even if you feel well, since phosphate control needs regular use
• Do not stop or change the dose without talking to your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• If you miss a dose with a meal, skip it and take the next dose with your next meal
• Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

Can I take this medicine without dialysis?

Will this medicine affect my calcium levels?
