This combination medicine is used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, especially when diet, exercise, and a single medicine are not enough to control blood sugar levels.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes
• Used along with diet and exercise for better blood sugar control
• Sometimes combined with other diabetes medicines as advised by your doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Saxagliptin increases levels of natural hormones (incretins) that help the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high
• Metformin reduces the amount of sugar produced by the liver and helps the body use insulin more effectively
• Together they help lower blood sugar levels more effectively than either alone

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for type 1 diabetes

• Signs of lactic acidosis such as unusual muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, extreme tiredness, or feeling cold
• Signs of low blood sugar such as shakiness, sweating, confusion, or fast heartbeat
• Severe joint pain
• Signs of pancreatitis such as severe stomach pain spreading to the back, with or without vomiting
• Swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing (allergic reaction)
• Yellowing of skin or eyes

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with a meal to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew it
• Do not change the dose or stop the medicine without consulting your doctor
• Continue to follow your prescribed diet and exercise plan along with this medicine
• Get your blood sugar and kidney function checked regularly as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your normal schedule

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to saxagliptin, metformin, or any ingredient in this medicine
• Have severe kidney disease
• Have diabetic ketoacidosis or a history of it
• Have severe liver disease
• Are undergoing a procedure requiring injected contrast dye (inform your doctor in advance)

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have any kidney or liver problems
• Have a history of heart failure or heart disease
• Have a history of pancreatitis
• Drink alcohol regularly
