Clozapine is mainly prescribed for people with severe schizophrenia who have not improved with other antipsychotic medicines, or for people who experience recurrent suicidal behaviour associated with schizophrenia or related psychotic disorders.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment-resistant schizophrenia
• Reducing risk of recurrent suicidal behaviour in schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder
• Sometimes used for psychosis in Parkinson's disease under specialist supervision

HOW IT WORKS

• Acts on dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain
• Helps reduce hallucinations, delusions and disorganised thinking
• Improves mood, behaviour and social functioning over time

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• High fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, sweating (possible severe reaction)
• Seizures or fits
• Signs of severe allergic reaction like swelling of face, lips or difficulty breathing

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually starting with a low dose that is gradually increased
• Can be taken with or without food, but be consistent with timing
• Swallow tablets with water; do not stop suddenly without medical advice
• Regular blood tests are required throughout treatment to monitor white blood cell counts

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
