Tofacitinib is used to treat conditions where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues, causing inflammation and damage.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Rheumatoid arthritis, especially when other treatments have not worked well
- Psoriatic arthritis
- Ulcerative colitis (a type of inflammatory bowel disease)
- Certain other autoimmune joint conditions as advised by your doctor
HOW IT WORKS
- Blocks enzymes called Janus kinases (JAKs) inside immune cells
- This reduces the signals that cause inflammation
- Helps reduce joint pain, swelling, and stiffness
- Helps reduce gut inflammation in ulcerative colitis
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- Not used for common infections or fevers
- Not a painkiller for ordinary muscle or joint pain
- Not used for osteoarthritis
- Not meant for immediate pain relief; it works gradually over weeks

HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually as a tablet by mouth
- Can be taken with or without food
- Swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew unless your doctor says so
- Do not stop or change the dose without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better
- Regular blood tests may be needed while you are on this medicine
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- Take it as soon as you remember
- If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
- Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
