This medicine is used to treat active tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

  • Treatment of pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis
  • Treatment of certain forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, as advised by your doctor
  • Used as part of the intensive or continuation phase of TB treatment along with other anti-TB drugs if needed

HOW IT WORKS

  • Rifampicin stops TB bacteria from making proteins they need to survive
  • Isoniazid destroys the outer wall of the TB bacteria
  • Ethambutol stops the bacteria from multiplying by blocking cell wall formation
  • Together they attack the bacteria in different ways, reducing the chance of drug resistance

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

  • Not used for viral infections such as cold, flu or COVID-19
  • Not used for ordinary bacterial infections not caused by TB
  • Not a preventive medicine for people without active or latent TB infection unless specifically advised

HOW TO TAKE IT

  • Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
  • Do not stop the medicine even if you feel better; TB treatment must be completed fully to prevent relapse and drug resistance
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment as it increases the risk of liver damage
  • Your doctor may ask for regular blood tests and eye check-ups during treatment

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

  • Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
  • If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
