Uses and Benefits of AKT-3 TABLET (Rifampicin 450mg + Isoniazid 300mg + Ethambutol 800mg)

This medicine is used to treat active tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of pulmonary (lung) tuberculosis
• Treatment of certain forms of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, as advised by your doctor
• Used as part of the intensive or continuation phase of TB treatment along with other anti-TB drugs if needed

HOW IT WORKS

• Rifampicin stops TB bacteria from making proteins they need to survive
• Isoniazid destroys the outer wall of the TB bacteria
• Ethambutol stops the bacteria from multiplying by blocking cell wall formation
• Together they attack the bacteria in different ways, reducing the chance of drug resistance

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for viral infections such as cold, flu or COVID-19
• Not used for ordinary bacterial infections not caused by TB
• Not a preventive medicine for people without active or latent TB infection unless specifically advised
• Not to be used for self-treatment of a persistent cough without doctor's confirmation of TB

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Loss of appetite
• Nausea or mild stomach upset
• Orange-red coloured urine, saliva or tears (harmless)
• Mild joint pain

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Skin rash or itching
• Headache or dizziness
• Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
• Mild vision changes

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Severe vomiting or persistent stomach pain
• Blurred vision, colour blindness or loss of vision (may indicate eye toxicity from Ethambutol)
• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling
• Unexplained bruising or bleeding
• Fever with rash, or breathlessness
• Signs of severe allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips or throat

How to Use AKT-3 TABLET (Rifampicin 450mg + Isoniazid 300mg + Ethambutol 800mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Do not stop the medicine even if you feel better; TB treatment must be completed fully to prevent relapse and drug resistance
• Avoid alcohol during treatment as it increases the risk of liver damage
• Your doctor may ask for regular blood tests and eye check-ups during treatment

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to take the medicine at the same time every day to avoid missing doses

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep in the original container, tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Ethambutol or any other ingredient in this medicine
• Have severe active liver disease
• Have optic neuritis (inflammation of the eye nerve), unless your doctor decides it is essential

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have any liver or kidney disease
• Have a history of eye problems or vision changes
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Drink alcohol regularly
• Have diabetes, gout, or peripheral neuropathy
• Are taking any other medicines, including herbal or over-the-counter products

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Oral contraceptive pills (this medicine can reduce their effectiveness)
• Blood thinners such as warfarin
• Other liver-affecting medicines
• Anti-diabetic medicines
• Antacids (can reduce absorption; take at a different time)
• Certain HIV and antifungal medicines
