WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes
• Used along with diet and exercise

HOW IT WORKS

• Sitagliptin increases hormones that help the pancreas release more insulin after meals
• Metformin reduces sugar production by the liver and improves body's response to insulin
• Empagliflozin helps kidneys remove extra sugar from the body through urine

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for type 1 diabetes
• Not used for diabetic ketoacidosis
• Not a treatment for weight loss, though weight loss may occur as a side effect

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with a meal to reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew
• Do not change the dose on your own
• Drink plenty of water while taking this medicine
• Continue diet and exercise plan as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one
• If you miss doses often, tell your doctor

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea or upset stomach
• Diarrhoea
• Increased urination
• Genital yeast infections
• Urinary tract infections

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Low blood sugar (especially if combined with other diabetes medicines)
• Skin rash or itching
• Loss of appetite

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of lactic acidosis such as severe weakness, muscle pain, trouble breathing, unusual tiredness
• Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, even with near-normal blood sugar
• Signs of dehydration or very low blood pressure
• Severe urinary tract infection with fever, back pain, or blood in urine
• Signs of pancreatitis such as severe stomach pain radiating to the back
• Allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing
