Alprazolam 0.25mg is mainly prescribed to treat anxiety disorders, including generalised anxiety disorder and panic disorder with or without fear of open spaces (agoraphobia).

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Short-term relief of symptoms of anxiety
• Treatment of panic disorder
• Sometimes used for anxiety associated with depression, only under medical supervision

HOW IT WORKS

• It acts on the brain and central nervous system by enhancing the effect of a natural calming chemical called GABA
• This slows down excessive nerve activity, producing a calming, muscle-relaxing and anti-anxiety effect

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat physical pain

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, in the dose and frequency advised
• It can be taken with or without food, usually with a glass of water
• Do not crush or chew unless your doctor or pharmacist tells you to
• Do not increase the dose or take it for longer than prescribed, as it can lead to dependence
• Do not stop suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms
• Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
