WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Preventing blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
• Treating and preventing deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• Preventing pulmonary embolism (clot in the lungs)
• Preventing clot formation after heart valve replacement
• Preventing clots in people with certain heart conditions as advised by a doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• It blocks vitamin K dependent clotting factors made by the liver
• This reduces the blood's ability to form clots
• The effect takes a few days to build up and a few days to wear off

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat pain or inflammation

• Signs of skin necrosis (painful dark skin patches, usually in first weeks)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day at the same time
