Uses and Benefits of ADFOVIR TABLET (ADEFOVIR 10MG)

Adefovir is prescribed for people with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to control the virus and protect the liver from further damage.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Long-term (chronic) hepatitis B infection in adults
• Reducing viral load and improving liver function tests over time
• Used in patients with evidence of active liver disease due to HBV

HOW IT WORKS

• It belongs to a class of antivirals called nucleotide analogues
• It blocks an enzyme the hepatitis B virus needs to copy itself
• This slows down virus multiplication and reduces liver inflammation

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It does not cure hepatitis B completely
• It is not used for hepatitis A or hepatitis C
• It is not effective against HIV and should not be used alone if HIV co-infection is present
• It is not a treatment for general liver disease unrelated to hepatitis B
• It does not prevent transmission of hepatitis B to others; usual precautions must still be followed

• Severe stomach pain with nausea and vomiting (possible pancreatitis)
• Unusual muscle pain, weakness, or numbness in hands or feet
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Reduced urine output or swelling in legs (possible kidney problems)
• Severe tiredness with rapid breathing and stomach pain (possible lactic acidosis)
• Sudden worsening of hepatitis after stopping the medicine

How to Use ADFOVIR TABLET (ADEFOVIR 10MG)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Can be taken with or without food
• Swallow the tablet with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Do not stop the medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can worsen hepatitis B
• Continue regular blood tests and liver monitoring as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to take your dose at the same time each day to help you remember

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to adefovir or any ingredient in the tablet
• Have not discussed your kidney function with your doctor, as this medicine needs kidney monitoring

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney disease or a history of kidney problems
• Have HIV infection, diagnosed or suspected
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have a history of liver problems other than hepatitis B
• Are taking other medicines that may affect the kidneys

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other medicines that can harm the kidneys (such as certain antibiotics or NSAIDs)
• Other antiviral drugs used for hepatitis B or HIV
• Any new prescription or over-the-counter medicine — always inform your doctor or pharmacist
