Uses and Benefits of AKURIT TABLET (Rifampicin 150mg + Isoniazid 75mg)

This medicine is used to treat tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that most commonly affects the lungs but can also affect other parts of the body.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of pulmonary and certain extra-pulmonary forms of tuberculosis
• Used as part of a combination anti-TB regimen along with other drugs
• Sometimes used for prevention of TB in high-risk contacts, as decided by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Rifampicin stops TB bacteria from making proteins needed to grow and multiply
• Isoniazid blocks formation of the bacterial cell wall, killing the bacteria
• Together they act faster and reduce chances of the bacteria becoming drug-resistant

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for viral infections like cold, flu or COVID-19
• Not used for ordinary bacterial infections other than TB
• Not a painkiller or fever medicine
• Not to be used without a doctor's prescription and monitoring

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea and vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Stomach upset
• Orange-red discoloration of urine, saliva, sweat or tears (harmless)
• Mild headache

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
• Skin rash or itching
• Dizziness
• Joint pain

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver damage)
• Severe stomach pain or persistent vomiting
• Unexplained fever, bruising or bleeding
• Severe skin reaction with blisters or peeling
• Vision changes or eye pain
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips, throat or difficulty breathing
• Extreme tiredness, confusion or dark-coloured stools

How to Use AKURIT TABLET (Rifampicin 150mg + Isoniazid 75mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily
• Best taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food, unless your doctor advises otherwise
• Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water
• Do not stop the medicine even if you feel better; complete the full course as advised
• Take it at the same time every day to help you remember

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Missing doses can make TB harder to treat, so try not to skip

STORAGE

• Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep below 30 degrees Celsius unless the label says otherwise
• Keep out of reach and sight of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to rifampicin, isoniazid or any other ingredient in this medicine
• Have severe active liver disease
• Have had liver damage from isoniazid or rifampicin before

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have any existing liver or kidney disease
• Drink alcohol regularly
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have diabetes, seizures, or a history of nerve problems
• Are taking other medicines, including herbal or over-the-counter products
• Use hormonal contraceptives, as this medicine may reduce their effectiveness
