This combination medicine is mainly used to treat chronic heart failure, a condition in which the heart cannot pump blood as efficiently as it should.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• To reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death in adults with chronic heart failure
• To help improve symptoms like breathlessness, fatigue and swelling caused by heart failure
• Sometimes used to help control blood pressure in people who also have heart failure

HOW IT WORKS

• Sacubitril blocks the breakdown of certain natural substances that help widen blood vessels and remove excess salt and water
• Valsartan blocks a hormone called angiotensin II, which narrows blood vessels and raises blood pressure
• Together they reduce the workload on the heart and improve blood flow

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for treating acute chest pain or heart attacks
• Not a painkiller or fever medicine
• Not meant for children unless specifically advised by a specialist
• Not a substitute for other heart failure medicines unless your doctor changes your treatment plan

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice a day
• Can be taken with or without food
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Do not stop taking it suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better
• Regular blood pressure, kidney function and potassium level checks may be needed while on this medicine

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Keep in the original packaging until ready to use

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are pregnant or planning pregnancy, as it can harm the unborn baby
• Are breastfeeding
• Have had angioedema (swelling reaction) with previous ACE inhibitor or ARB use
• Are currently taking an ACE inhibitor (needs a gap of at least 36 hours before switching)
• Have severe liver disease
