Lactulose is mainly used to treat constipation and to lower blood ammonia levels in patients with liver disease.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Relief of constipation
• Softening of stools for easier bowel movement
• Treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (confusion caused by liver disease)

HOW IT WORKS

• It is not absorbed from the gut and draws water into the bowel, which softens stool and stimulates bowel movement
• In liver disease, it changes gut bacteria and traps ammonia in the bowel so it can be passed out in the stool

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a treatment for diarrhoea
• It is not used for weight loss
• It is not a painkiller or treatment for stomach infections
• It should not be used for sudden, severe abdominal pain without medical advice

How to Use EMTY SYRUP (Lactulose 3.335g)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor
• Usually taken once or twice a day, with or without food
• Can be mixed with water or juice to make it easier to drink
• Drink plenty of water while taking this medicine
• It may take 1 to 2 days to show effect, so do not increase the dose on your own

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep the bottle tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to lactulose or any ingredient in the product
• Have a blockage in your intestine (bowel obstruction)

• Are diabetic, as some preparations may contain sugars
