Finerenone is prescribed for adults with chronic kidney disease linked to type 2 diabetes, to slow disease progression and lower the risk of heart problems related to this condition.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Slowing worsening of kidney function in type 2 diabetes patients with chronic kidney disease
• Reducing risk of heart failure hospitalisation and cardiovascular events in these patients
• Used along with other diabetes, blood pressure, or heart medicines as directed

HOW IT WORKS

• Blocks the mineralocorticoid receptor, which is overactivated in kidney and heart disease
• Reduces inflammation and scarring (fibrosis) in the kidneys and heart
• Helps control potassium and fluid balance changes that damage these organs over time

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used to treat type 1 diabetes
• Not a substitute for insulin or other blood sugar lowering medicines

• Severe dizziness or fainting due to very low blood pressure
• Sudden decrease in urine output
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips, throat, or difficulty breathing
• Unusual tiredness, confusion, or muscle weakness that worsens suddenly

HOW TO TAKE IT

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have severe liver disease
• Have very high potassium levels already
• Have Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency)
• Are allergic to finerenone or any ingredient in the tablet

• Have any degree of kidney impairment, especially advanced disease

• Other mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists like spironolactone or eplerenone
