This combination medicine is commonly prescribed for infections of the intestines and abdomen caused by a mix of bacteria and protozoa, such as infectious diarrhoea and dysentery.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Bacterial and amoebic diarrhoea
• Intestinal infections caused by mixed organisms
• Abdominal infections including some cases needing surgical support
• Traveller's diarrhoea in some cases

HOW IT WORKS

• Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that stops bacteria from multiplying by blocking enzymes needed for their DNA to copy
• Ornidazole works against protozoa and certain anaerobic bacteria by damaging their DNA, killing the organism
• Together they cover a broader range of causative organisms in mixed gut infections

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral diarrhoea or common stomach upset
• Common cold or flu
• Infections not confirmed or suspected to involve the organisms this medicine targets
• As a general painkiller for stomach pain without infection

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Loss of appetite
• Metallic taste in mouth
• Diarrhoea

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Sleep disturbance
• Skin rash or itching
• Vaginal itching or discharge

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe skin reaction with blistering or peeling
• Sudden swelling of face, lips, or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Tendon pain or swelling, especially in the ankle
• Numbness, tingling, or weakness in hands or feet
• Seizures or fits
• Yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine
• Severe, persistent diarrhoea, especially with blood
• Unusual mood changes, confusion, or hallucinations

How to Use KLAP TABLET (OFLOXACIN 200MG + ORNIDAZOLE 500MG)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice a day
• Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water
• Take after food to reduce stomach upset
• Complete the full course even if you feel better, do not stop early
• Drink plenty of fluids while on this medicine
• Avoid excessive sunlight exposure as it may increase sensitivity to sunburn

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one
• Try to take doses at the same times each day to maintain consistent levels

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight
• Keep in a dry place, away from moisture
• Keep out of reach and sight of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to ofloxacin, ornidazole, or other fluoroquinolone or nitroimidazole medicines
• Have a history of tendon problems linked to fluoroquinolone use
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor advises it is necessary
• Are a child or adolescent still growing, unless specifically prescribed
• Have a history of seizure disorders not controlled by treatment

• Have kidney or liver disease
• Have a history of epilepsy or nerve disorders
• Have heart rhythm problems
• Have diabetes
• Are on blood thinners
• Consume alcohol regularly

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Blood thinners like warfarin
• Antacids, iron, or calcium supplements which reduce absorption
• Other medicines affecting heart rhythm
• Medicines for diabetes
• Theophylline and certain other drugs metabolised similarly
