WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling and preventing seizures (fits) in epilepsy, alone or with other anti-epileptic medicines
• Preventing episodes of depression in adults with bipolar disorder
• Long-term maintenance treatment as advised by a specialist

HOW IT WORKS

• It stabilises electrical activity in the brain by acting on nerve cell membranes
• It reduces the release of certain chemical messengers that trigger seizures
• This helps prevent abnormal nerve signals that cause fits or mood swings

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat headaches or body pain
• It is not used for sudden manic episodes needing immediate control

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once or twice a day

• Doses are usually started low and increased gradually, so follow your doctor's schedule carefully
