Acetylcysteine 400mg is mainly used to treat conditions where thick, sticky mucus builds up in the airways, making breathing and coughing difficult.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Chronic bronchitis and other conditions with excess thick mucus
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with mucus build-up
• Helping clear mucus in cystic fibrosis and similar lung conditions
• As an antidote for paracetamol poisoning (usually given in hospital, not as oral tablets)

HOW IT WORKS

• Breaks the chemical bonds within thick mucus, making it thinner and less sticky
• Thinner mucus is easier to cough out, improving breathing and reducing chest congestion
• Also acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from certain types of damage

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, in terms of dose and frequency
• Effervescent tablets should be dissolved completely in a glass of water before drinking
• Can usually be taken with or after food to reduce stomach upset
• Drink plenty of water through the day, as fluids help loosen mucus further
• Do not increase the dose or stop suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better
• Complete the full course as advised, especially in chronic conditions

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

• Store at room temperature, away from direct heat, sunlight and moisture
• Keep the strip or container tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use if the tablet or sachet is discoloured or the expiry date has passed
