Uses and Benefits of OBETOHEP 10MG TABLET (Obeticholic Acid 10mg)

Obeticholic Acid 10mg is prescribed for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a long-term autoimmune liver disease that damages the small bile ducts in the liver.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in adults
• Used alone in patients who cannot take ursodeoxycholic acid, or in combination with it
• Helps slow down liver damage caused by poor bile flow

HOW IT WORKS

• It activates a receptor called FXR (farnesoid X receptor) in the liver
• This reduces the amount of bile acid the liver makes
• It also helps improve the flow of bile out of the liver
• Over time, this reduces liver inflammation and scarring

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for viral hepatitis (Hepatitis B or C)
• Not used for fatty liver disease not linked to PBC
• Not a painkiller or general liver tonic
• Not for use in decompensated liver disease unless specifically advised by a liver specialist

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Itching of the skin (very common, especially early in treatment)

• Severe, unbearable itching affecting sleep or daily life
• Signs of allergic reaction — swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing

How to Use OBETOHEP 10MG TABLET (Obeticholic Acid 10mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day
• Can be taken with or without food, as advised
• Swallow the tablet whole with water
• Do not increase or decrease the dose on your own
• Regular blood tests to check liver function will be needed during treatment

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember on the same day
• If you remember only the next day, skip the missed dose and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep in the original container, tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have complete blockage of the bile duct
• Are allergic to obeticholic acid or any ingredient in the tablet
• Have decompensated cirrhosis, unless specifically directed by your specialist

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have advanced liver disease or cirrhosis
• Have a history of severe itching with liver medicines

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Bile acid binding resins (like cholestyramine, colestipol) — these can reduce absorption; timing of doses needs to be separated
