Uses and Benefits of RECLIMET (GLICLAZIDE 80MG + METFORMIN 500MG)

This combination medicine is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise and a single medicine alone are not enough to control blood sugar.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) in type 2 diabetes
• Used along with diet and exercise for better blood sugar control
• Sometimes used together with other diabetes medicines as advised by the doctor

HOW IT WORKS

• Gliclazide stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin
• Metformin reduces the amount of sugar made by the liver
• Metformin also helps body tissues use insulin more effectively, lowering blood sugar

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for type 1 diabetes
• Not used for diabetic ketoacidosis, a medical emergency
• Not a substitute for insulin when insulin is required
• Not used for weight loss or general fatigue without a diagnosis of diabetes

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea or vomiting
• Loss of appetite
• Diarrhoea or stomach upset
• Metallic taste in mouth

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Headache
• Dizziness
• Skin rash or itching
• Mild low blood sugar symptoms like sweating or shakiness

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of severe low blood sugar such as confusion, blurred vision, cold sweat, or loss of consciousness
• Unusual muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, or stomach pain with vomiting, which may indicate a rare condition called lactic acidosis
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine, suggesting liver problems
• Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing
• Unusual bruising or bleeding

How to Use RECLIMET (GLICLAZIDE 80MG + METFORMIN 500MG)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with or just after meals
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Take at the same time(s) each day to maintain steady blood sugar control
• Continue diet and exercise plan advised by your doctor
• Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor
• Monitor your blood sugar regularly as advised

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose
• Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one
• If you miss doses often, tell your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture
• Keep the strip in its original packaging
• Keep out of reach of children and pets
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to gliclazide, metformin, or sulfonylurea medicines
• Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
• Have severe kidney or liver disease
• Have severe infection, dehydration, or are about to undergo surgery or an X-ray procedure using contrast dye
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless advised by your doctor

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney, liver, or heart problems
• Have a history of low blood sugar episodes
• Drink alcohol regularly
• Are elderly or have poor nutrition
• Are scheduled for surgery or a scan involving contrast dye

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Other diabetes medicines or insulin
• Steroids, diuretics (water pills), and certain blood pressure medicines
• Alcohol, which can increase risk of low blood sugar or lactic acidosis
• Certain antibiotics and painkillers
• Contrast dye used in imaging tests
