Torsemide 5mg is mainly prescribed to treat fluid retention (oedema) and high blood pressure.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Swelling of legs, ankles or abdomen due to heart failure
• Fluid buildup caused by liver disease (cirrhosis)
• Fluid retention linked to kidney disease
• Management of high blood pressure, often along with other medicines

HOW IT WORKS

• It acts on the kidneys to increase the removal of excess salt and water from the body through urine
• This reduces the amount of fluid in blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and easing swelling
• Less fluid load on the heart helps it pump more efficiently

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller and does not treat pain or fever
• It does not cure the underlying heart, liver or kidney disease; it only manages fluid symptoms

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Yellowing of skin or eyes, or dark urine (signs of liver problems)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once a day in the morning
• Can be taken with or without food, but try to be consistent
• Swallow the tablet with a glass of water
• Avoid taking it in the evening as it may cause frequent urination at night
• Do not stop the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember on the same day
• If it is already close to your next dose or evening time, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep the strip or bottle tightly closed
• Keep out of reach of children and pets

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are unable to pass urine (anuria)

• Are in hepatic coma or pre-coma due to liver disease, unless specifically directed by a specialist
