This medicine is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults who need more than one medicine to control their blood sugar levels.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Controlling high blood sugar in type 2 diabetes
• Used when diet, exercise and a single diabetes medicine are not enough
• Helps reduce long-term complications of diabetes such as eye, kidney and nerve damage

HOW IT WORKS

• Glimepiride stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin
• Pioglitazone improves the body's sensitivity to insulin, especially in muscle and fat tissue
• Metformin reduces sugar production by the liver and improves insulin action
• Together they help lower blood glucose through three complementary mechanisms

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Not used for type 1 diabetes

• Dizziness
• Metallic taste in mouth

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Signs of lactic acidosis - unusual muscle pain, difficulty breathing, extreme tiredness, stomach pain
• Severe hypoglycemia - confusion, seizures, loss of consciousness
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (liver problems)
• Sudden weight gain, breathlessness or chest pain (possible heart failure)
• Severe allergic reaction - swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, severe rash
• Blood in urine or unexplained bladder symptoms

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with the first main meal of the day
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
• Take at the same time each day for consistent blood sugar control
• Continue to follow your prescribed diet and exercise plan
• Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well
• Monitor blood sugar levels as advised by your doctor

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose
• Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one
• If you miss doses often, tell your doctor

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture
• Keep in original packaging away from direct sunlight
• Keep out of reach of children

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
• Have severe kidney or liver disease
• Have heart failure or a history of heart failure
• Have active bladder cancer or a history of it
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by your doctor
• Are allergic to any of the three components or sulfa drugs

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have any kidney, liver or heart problems
• Are scheduled for surgery or an X-ray/scan requiring contrast dye
• Drink alcohol regularly
• Have a history of low blood sugar episodes
• Have osteoporosis or history of bone fractures

• Other diabetes medicines or insulin
• Steroids and diuretics (water pills)
• Blood thinners like warfarin
• Certain antibiotics and antifungal medicines
