Uses and Benefits of VIROLIS-E KIT (LAMIVUDINE+STAVUDINE)

This combination medicine is used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection, as part of a multi-drug antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Treatment of HIV infection in adults, always combined with other antiretroviral drugs
• Reducing the amount of virus (viral load) in the blood
• Helping keep the immune system (CD4 cell count) stronger for longer

HOW IT WORKS

• Lamivudine and Stavudine both block an enzyme called reverse transcriptase that HIV needs to multiply
• By blocking this enzyme, the virus cannot copy itself and spread to new cells
• This slows disease progression and lowers the risk of HIV-related complications

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a cure for HIV/AIDS
• It does not prevent transmission of HIV to others through blood or sexual contact
• It is not used for other viral infections such as hepatitis B or common flu
• It should not be used alone as complete HIV therapy; it is always given with other antiretroviral medicines

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Diarrhoea

• Tiredness or weakness

LESS COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Numbness, tingling or pain in hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy)
• Loss of appetite
• Skin rash
• Muscle pain
• Changes in body fat distribution with long-term use

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe stomach pain, nausea and vomiting (possible pancreatitis)
• Unusual muscle weakness, rapid breathing, or severe tiredness (possible lactic acidosis)
• Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face, lips or throat, and difficulty breathing

How to Use VIROLIS-E KIT (LAMIVUDINE+STAVUDINE)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with a full glass of water
• It can be taken with or without food unless your doctor advises otherwise
• Take doses at evenly spaced times to keep a constant level of medicine in the body
• Do not stop the medicine on your own even if you feel better, as this can lead to drug resistance
• Continue taking it along with all other prescribed antiretroviral medicines

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one
• Try to use reminders to avoid missing doses, as regular intake is important for this medicine to work well

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use after the expiry date printed on the pack
• Do not store in the bathroom or near a sink

This is a prescription-only medicine in India and must be used only under the supervision of a qualified doctor experienced in HIV treatment.

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to lamivudine, stavudine, or any other ingredient in the tablet
• Have severe peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) unless advised otherwise by your doctor
• Are already taking Zidovudine, as it should not be combined with Stavudine

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have liver or kidney disease
• Have a history of pancreatitis
• Are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding
• Have anaemia or other blood disorders
• Consume alcohol regularly
• Are taking any other medicines, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Zidovudine (should not be combined with Stavudine)
• Other drugs that can cause nerve damage, such as isoniazid
• Medicines affecting the kidney or liver
• Alcohol, which can increase risk of liver and pancreas problems
