WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Preventing blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
• Preventing clots in people with artificial heart valves
• Treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
• Treating or preventing pulmonary embolism (clot in the lungs)
• Reducing risk of stroke in certain heart conditions

HOW IT WORKS

• Warfarin blocks the action of vitamin K, which is needed to make certain clotting factors
• This slows down the blood's ability to form clots
• It does not dissolve existing clots but prevents new ones and stops existing clots from growing

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• It is not a painkiller
• It is not used for immediate emergency clot dissolving (that needs different injectable medicines)
• It is not used to treat infections or inflammation
• It should not be used without regular blood monitoring (INR testing)

HOW TO TAKE IT
