This medicine is a combination of two antibiotics used to treat certain bacterial infections in adults.

WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR

• Urinary tract infections
• Typhoid fever
• Respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis
• Ear, nose and throat infections
• Certain skin and soft tissue infections

HOW IT WORKS

• Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic that stops bacteria from building their protective cell wall, causing them to die
• Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that blocks bacterial enzymes needed for DNA replication, stopping bacteria from multiplying
• Together they act against a broader range of bacteria than either medicine alone

WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR

• Viral infections such as common cold, flu or most sore throats
• Fungal infections
• As a general painkiller or fever reducer
• Prevention of infection without a doctor's advice

This medicine should only be used for the specific infection your doctor has diagnosed and prescribed it for. Using it unnecessarily can lead to antibiotic resistance.

COMMON SIDE EFFECTS

• Nausea
• Stomach pain or discomfort
• Diarrhoea
• Loss of appetite
• Headache

• Metallic or unusual taste in mouth
• Sleep disturbance

SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS — STOP AND SEE A DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY

• Severe watery or bloody diarrhoea
• Signs of allergic reaction such as swelling of face/lips/throat, breathing difficulty, or severe rash
• Yellowing of eyes or skin, dark urine (signs of liver problems)
• Sudden joint or tendon pain and swelling, especially in the ankle or heel
• Seizures, confusion, tremors or unusual behaviour
• Irregular heartbeat or palpitations
• Severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling

How to Use ZIFI-O 100DT (Cefixime 100mg + Ofloxacin 100mg)

HOW TO TAKE IT

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, at the same times each day
• Can usually be taken with or without food, unless your doctor advises otherwise
• Swallow the tablet with a full glass of water; do not crush or chew unless instructed
• Drink plenty of water through the day while on this medicine
• Complete the full course even if you feel better before finishing it
• Do not stop early or skip doses, as this can lead to the infection returning or antibiotic resistance

IF YOU MISS A DOSE

• Take it as soon as you remember
• If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule
• Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one

STORAGE

• Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
• Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the pack
• Discard any unused medicine safely, do not save leftover antibiotics for future use

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU

• Are allergic to cephalosporins, penicillins, fluoroquinolones or any ingredient in this medicine
• Have a history of tendon problems linked with fluoroquinolone antibiotics
• Are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless specifically advised by your doctor
• Are under 18 years of age, unless prescribed by a doctor

TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU

• Have kidney or liver disease
• Have epilepsy or any seizure disorder
• Have a heart rhythm problem or are on medicines affecting heart rhythm
• Have diabetes
• Have myasthenia gravis
• Have had tendon or joint problems in the past

MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT

• Antacids, iron or calcium supplements (space out timing by a few hours)
• Blood thinners such as warfarin
• Other medicines affecting heart rhythm
• NSAIDs like ibuprofen, which may increase risk of seizures with this combination
• Theophylline used for asthma or breathing problems
• Oral diabetes medicines, as blood sugar levels may be affected

It is best to avoid taking it at the same time as dairy products or calcium-fortified foods, as they can reduce absorption; space them a few hours apart.
