This medicine combination is used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially when diet, exercise and a single diabetes medicine are not enough to control blood sugar.
WHAT THIS MEDICINE IS USED FOR
- Controlling high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes
- Used when metformin alone does not give adequate control
- Helps reduce the risk of long-term diabetes complications when blood sugar is well controlled
HOW IT WORKS
- Glimepiride helps the pancreas release more insulin
- Metformin reduces the amount of sugar produced by the liver and improves the body's response to insulin
- Pioglitazone makes the body's cells more sensitive to insulin, helping muscle and fat use sugar better
WHAT IT IS NOT USED FOR
- Not used for type 1 diabetes
- Not used for diabetic ketoacidosis, a medical emergency

- Signs of lactic acidosis: unusual tiredness, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain
- Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine (liver problems)
- Sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or chest pain (possible heart or fluid-related problem)
- Signs of an allergic reaction: rash, swelling of face or throat, difficulty breathing
- Bone fractures with long-term use

HOW TO TAKE IT
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with the first main meal of the day
- Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew unless advised
- Do not skip meals after taking this medicine, as it can cause low blood sugar
- Continue regular blood sugar monitoring as advised by your doctor
- Do not stop the medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor
IF YOU MISS A DOSE
- Take it as soon as you remember with food
- If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose
- Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed one

- Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture

DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU
- Have type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
- Have severe kidney or liver disease
- Have heart failure or a history of bladder cancer
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are allergic to any of the three ingredients
TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STARTING IF YOU
- Have any heart, liver or kidney condition
- Drink alcohol regularly
- Are scheduled for surgery or an X-ray with contrast dye
- Have a history of low blood sugar episodes
- Have osteoporosis or are at risk of fractures
MEDICINES THAT CAN INTERACT
- Other diabetes medicines or insulin
- Steroids and certain blood pressure medicines
- Alcohol, which increases risk of low blood sugar and lactic acidosis
- Certain antibiotics and pain relievers (NSAIDs)
- Contrast dye used in imaging tests
